About Northern Italy

Northern Italy encompasses an incredible variety of landscapes, from the rolling vineyards of Veneto to the crystal-clear waters of the Italian Lakes. The region blends natural beauty with cultural richness. You can be horseback riding through Prosecco wine country one day and exploring Renaissance masterpieces the next.

The Italian Lakes, especially Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda, are renowned for their serene beauty, elegant villas, and lush gardens. Lake Maggiore, which straddles Italy and Switzerland, boasts grand historic palaces and the famous Borromean Islands, while Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, is framed by mountains, olive groves, and charming lakeside villages like Sirmione.

In Veneto, you’ll find the cultural capitals of Verona and Venice. Verona is famous for its Roman amphitheatre, which hosts the renowned Verona Opera festival each year, and for being the setting of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Venice — with its winding canals and world-famous landmarks like St. Mark’s Basilica — is home to some of Italy’s finest museums and churches.

What to Do in Northern Italy

Explore the Italian Lakes
A trip to Lake Maggiore isn't complete without visiting the Borromean Islands, home to exquisite gardens and the majestic Palazzo Borromeo. Charter a private boat and hop between idyllic islands, or explore picturesque lakeside towns like Stresa, known for its Belle Époque architecture. On Lake Garda, take a stroll through Sirmione’s narrow streets, sip delicious red wine in Bardolino, and sunbathe on the sandy beaches of Lazise. For those seeking adventure, the lakes are perfect for watersports like windsurfing and jet skiing, as well as hiking through the surrounding hills.

Discover Veneto’s Cultural Riches
In Verona, visit the Roman Arena, still hosting operas under the stars, and stop for aperitivo the bustling Piazza Brà. A day in Venice is nothing short of mesmerising. The best way to see the city is on foot, meandering through the maze-like streets from Piazza San Marco to the quieter squares of Dorsoduro. For art enthusiasts, the Gallerie dell'Accademia holds one of Italy’s finest collections of Renaissance masterpieces, while the Guggenheim is a must for lovers of Modernism.

With Tuscany Now & More, every experience is tailored to you. Our concierge can arrange private vineyard tours in Veneto’s Valpolicella region, exclusive boat trips on the lakes, or private transfers for a day of shopping in Milan. Whether you want a private guide to show you quiet Venetian islands or a cooking class in your villa with a local chef, we can make it happen.

Food & Drink in Northern Italy

The cuisine in Northern Italy is as varied as its landscapes, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Around the Italian Lakes, expect to enjoy freshly caught lake fish like perch and trout, paired with crisp local wines from the surrounding vineyards. Lake Garda is known for its olive oil production, and the extra virgin olive oil from this region rivals even Tuscany’s in its quality and flavour.

In Veneto, you can indulge in some of Italy’s finest culinary traditions. Enjoy risotto with Amarone wine, creamy polenta dishes, and the fresh flavours of seafood from the Venetian lagoon. Don’t miss the chance to taste authentic Prosecco in its homeland, or sip on the rich red wines of Valpolicella.

When you stay at one of our luxury holiday homes, our concierge can arrange private wine tastings of local labels like Gavi di Gavi and Soave, as well as private tours of family-run wineries. They can book tables at the best restaurants in Venice off the main tourist trail for the most authentic dining experiences.

Why Stay in Northern Italy

Every traveller is different, so there is no such thing as the “best” villa in Northern Italy; only the best North Italian holiday rental for you. When you contact Tuscany Now & More, you will talk to someone who has stayed at the villas which interest you. It’s our golden rule — and why we stick to a focused, specialist portfolio of around 150 handpicked villas.

Staying in one of our handpicked villas places you at the heart of this stunning region, allowing you to enjoy both the serenity of the countryside and the excitement of nearby cultural landmarks. From Michelin-Star dining on Lake Orta to cycling itineraries in the Colli Euganei hills near Padua, there’s a villa to match your interests and destination.

When to Visit Northern Italy

Spring (March-May) is one of the best times to visit Northern Italy, with temperatures ranging from 15℃ to 22℃ (59℉ to 72℉) and fewer crowds than during the summer months. This is the perfect time for exploring the Italian Lakes, and hiking in the dolomites and lush countryside.

Summer (June-August) is peak season, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 30℃ (86℉). It’s the ideal time to relax by your villa’s private pool or enjoy watersports on Lake Garda. Summer also brings festivals like Verona Opera and Venice’s world-famous Biennale.

Autumn (September-November) is another wonderful time to visit, with cooler temperatures averaging around 20℃ (68℉). This is also harvest season, making it an excellent time for wine lovers to explore Veneto and Piedmont’s vineyards and experience local food festivals.

Winter (December-February) sees fewer tourists, but the region still holds plenty of charm. Venice in winter is a magical experience and hosts the iconic Carnevale every February. Winter temperatures can range from 5℃ to 12℃ (41℉ to 54℉), offering a crisp, quiet atmosphere perfect for cosying up in museums.
