Set in green hills just south-west of Lucca, 4km/2 miles by car, in a hamlet too small to appear on maps but well known as the site of the Renaissance Villa Bernardini - one of several historic homes that can be visited in the area. The nearest restaurant is 1km/600 yards with a food shop and butcher in Via San Donato, 2km/1 mile. Lucca is a very pretty town with beautiful churches and piazzas, and some very good restaurants. It is easily explored on foot or by bicycle, and its enclosing walls are topped with a wonderful promenade. The annual Puccini opera Festival takes place just west of here, in Torre del Lago. Pisa and her Leaning Tower are 18km/11 miles to the south; to the north is the Garfagnana region, 40km/20 miles, which is terrific for hiking, and the unique marble quarries of Carrara, 55km/34 miles; to the east is Florence, 80km/50 miles, with the famous thermal spa at Montecatini Terme along the way. Beaches and an 18-hole golf course at Forte dei Marmi, 35km/22 miles.

Wish we had another week. The house is beautiful, so well cared for. Our home was built in 1886, so we appreciated the architecture, antiques, and lovely gardens to stroll. A great location! Have visited Lucca before, but nice to see so close and take advantage of the sights, restaurants and shopping. On our 18th trip to Italy, from here we saw a lot in a week! La Gattaiola has been an idyllic setting for our family to enjoy a week of La Dolce Vita. With ages from 2 to 72 the villa has provided facilities for all, from swimming & table tennis to simply enjoying the afternoon sun at the veranda and its impressive views across Lucca and beyond.

We love the layout, the villa feels steeped in history and splendour combined with a lovely homeliness. We have everything we need. We also love the gardens. We booked a chef which was excellent. Gorgeous food, lots of food & lovely people.

The garden is beautiful - a highlight is the fireflies next to the bamboo path at night - these were magical. The villa has a lot of character and the owners were so helpful with lots of tips and checked on how things were during the holiday - thank you Francesca. Flori was a lovely caretaker - thank you. One night, Monica cooked us an amazing meal with home made pasta and tiramisu - thank you!

We had a really good time at La Gattaiola!
The villa has an air of authenticity and the interior of the rooms is everything you would expect from a classic Tuscan villa. We were seven people (family) staying at La Gattaiola and there more than enough space for all of us. The house is fully-equipped with air conditioning in all bed rooms.
We enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings both at the outdoor dining table and in the lovely white sofas in front of the villa enjoying the view and the beautiful surroundings.
The villa has a very good location close to Lucca on the slope of a hill and with a nice view of the city and the surroundings.
The big garden is fantastic with flowers, fig trees, herbs, a pool, many terraces etc. The property is taken care of by a gardener and a pool man. A maid cleaned the house every morning. Niccolo, the owner, was very helpful and called before, under and after our stay to secure that we got the most of our holiday.

I would like to say how happy we were at Villa Gattaiola for our holiday between the 2nd and 9th June, 2018.
We were met on arrival by Andreas who showed us around the Villa and was on hand if we had any questions. The Villa was beautifully clean and tidy with all the comforts of home and spectacular views.
The pool was very inviting and Fabrizio carried out a follow up clean on the Monday and the gardeners also attended. Flori arrived everyday at around 0900hrs to clean and was always cheerful and happy to answer any questions.
All the rooms were spacious and the beds comfortable with enough showers and bathrooms to cope with a full house. The wifi is fast and constant, which is very necessary in this digital age and the mobile signal was strong at all times. We loved the rustic feel and the furnishings and the photos and artwork just gave it such a home from home feeling. The library was a bonus, especially when you just wanted a quiet time out of our full and hectic days.
Lucca is fantastic and we explored the city within the walls on more than one occasion and made the most of the cafes and restaurants in the many Piazzas.
The Villa is ideally placed to reach the various places we wanted to visit which included Sienna (1.5hrs), Pisa (0.5hrs), Florence (1.0Hrs), San Gimignano (1.0hrs) and Cinque Terre (1.0hrs to La Spezia and then 10 minute train to Riomaggiore).
Niccolo was always happy to answer questions and booked the local restaurant (15 minutes walk from the Villa) Antica Osteria Di Meati for us on our arrival, which is very good and reasonably priced.
We had a great time and would highly recommend Villa Gattaiola.

We had a lovely family holiday in La Gattaiola. The villa is very well equipped and comfortable in the hills above Lucca and we were perfectly happy just staying in the villa , swimming and reading in the garden. There were some very good restaurants close by and we found the owner exceptionally helpful and we enjoyed following his recommendations for eating out and days out hiking in the hills.

The Campbell and Londesborough family thouroughly enjoyed their two weeks of vacation at La Villa Gattaiola. It is such a beautiful elegant villa with incredible views of the Valley and Lucca below. The terrace and the pool made the time here, so relaxing after touring plus the shade trees very cooling. This is such a welcoming family villa that exudes elegance. Would love to return. The restaurant Osteria Meati at the bottom of the hill is wonderful with a beautiful terrace outside and with such a welcoming staff. The food is very fresh, local and delicious. Such a great family restaurant.

Fabulous villa in a picturesque part of Tuscany. On arrival we were met by the caretaker who lives next door. He was very helpful and showed us around. The owner phoned shortly afterwards to make sure we were setting in and if we had any queries. Flori the cleaner came every day and she was also very nice and helpful. The villa is just as you imagine a traditional Tuscan villa to be it is very beautiful and full of charm. We all loved the pool especially the children. It was lovely to cool off in the wonderful sunshine.
